May 27th 2009 First Steps to creating a website for your new or existing business.

After you decide on a business name and file your DBA (doing business as) or if you're an existing business you are more than likely going to want to have a matching domain name. Purchasing a domain name is quite simple, you can go to several different places to buy a domain name; register.com, name.com, godaddy.com, even yahoo.com sells domain names. The next step is finding web hosting for your domain name; think of this as renting space on the internet. You can find free web hosting online but they don't come highly recommend unless you're on a strick budget. Usually the more you pay the more supoort you get.

May 28th 2009 Web Editing Software/Programs

When deciding on a program to create your website, some use Microsoft's frontpage others use Adobe's dreamweaver or you might have seen the free yahoo Site Builder on Yahoo. The Yahoo Site Builder is a great way to familiarize yourself on how to create a website and how it all comes together. Yahoo Site Builder is free if you host your domain name with Yahoo. If you take this route after a few months or so you might find yourself wanting to add a few more features not avaiable on Yahoo Site Builder. When you've reached this stage in development you will have to switch to a full functional website developing program like frontpage or dreamweaver. Unfortunately the pages you create in Yahoo Site Builder are not compatible and cannot be exported to either one of these programs which means you're gonna have to recreate your pages in HTML and possibly create a new design. May 29th 2009 Web Design Services you should stay away from.

The web is full of web design companies offering you websites in just a few minutes by choosing a pre-mad template of your choice. You're asked to start by choosing a preferred domain name, then you have to choose your theme category and web template. You fill out a few fill in the blanks and you're done. After all is said and done you've paid a setup fee of several hundred dollars for your your domain name and various other goodies like a few email accounts. Then you're billed $50 Dollars or more a month for Hosting. Remember you pay this fee every month for the life of your website. Read the following disadvantages of ALL-IN-ONE Website Providers.

  1. The disadvantage of using an all-in-one template package is that you typically don't own the domain when you sign up. If you cancel your contract or if you decide not to renew it you don't keep your domain name, it belongs to the website provider.
  2. Templates can be costly and extremely time consuming to edit. Usually you need a proprietary editor for this.
  3. You risk having the same website as a competitor. (We see this all the time, business owners go online and find another competitor who's using the same website template but with different colors.) At this point what does a potential client think? How do they decide to who to pic?
  4. Over priced Hosting Fees, usually $50 Dollars or more a month. This is more than hosting they're charging you. This makes up for the somewhat low setup fees they charge. If you only use their services for a year more than likely you've already invested close to $1000 Dollars or more.
